Obituary of Sister St. Bride Laverty

Sister St. Bride Laverty CSJ

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada is saddened to announce that Sister St. Bride Laverty died peacefully at the residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 485 Windermere Road, London Ontario, on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Sarah Ann was born on October 23, 1923, in Longhgeil, County Antrim, Ireland. She was received into the Sisters of St. Joseph on January 3, 1942, at Sacred Heart Convent, London where she professed her final vows on August 25, 1947. She is remembered fondly by all her CSJ Sisters, staff members at our London residence, nieces, Ann St. Pierre and Mary Catherine McMillan, and nephew Sean Rougeau. Sister St. Bride was predeceased by her parents, Sarah (McMullan) and Daniel Laverty, her sister, Elizabeth (Don) Gillespie, and brother Charles.

St. Bride’s early ministries were in housekeeping and laundry at convents in Belle River, Seaforth, and St. Peter’s Seminary. Following her graduation from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, she held various positions of responsibility at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chatham, and General Hospital in Killam AB, where she was director of nursing and assistant administrator. She also served at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Galahad, AB., and the congregation’s regional house infirmary in Edmonton.

Sister St. Bride was an avid sports fan taking particular interest in the fortunes of the Edmonton Elks. The door of her suite was routinely open to welcome others for a chat. Her visitors were treated to the tales of a delightful storyteller who easily engaged them in a memorable interchange.

All services will be held at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, 485 Windermere Road, London.
